This is a little gem of a book. I was given a copy many years ago and it has been so well used it has that loved dog-eared look. I love to cook, 99% of our meals are made from scratch and this book has a great range of easy and very tastefull recipes. The cashew nut chicken recipe has become one of all time favourites and I have yet to find anyone who doesn't love it. Easy to read, good print, basic ingredient and that WOW factor. I was thrilled to be able to still buy a copy for our daughter.

This is a fantastic cookbook for those beginning to cook Indian food. I especially like the large definition of ingrediants. This allowed me to use spices and vegetables, that I was perhaps not so familiar with, without feeling intimidated. Nothing in this book is extravegent or unrealistic. Instead, Vijayakar included some great, simple, and delicious dishes. I haven't made a single unappetizing dish from this book yet! I highly recommend it.

This Journal has some bad information in it. For example, it recommends 1200-1800 calorie intake for men for weight loss. That would possibly be an ok calorie intake for men if they sit at a desk for 8 hours then a couch in front of a tv for 8 hours, and finally their bed for 8 hours. That is an unhealthy calorie intake for even a slightly active male and will only hinder your progress towards weight loss as it will kill your metabolism. Your typical male can lose weight (a safe 1-2lbs a week) with eating 1700-2500 calories depending on exercise and activity levels. There is no reason for a grown male to ever drop under 1600 calories, doing so will only hinder weight loss and initiate muscle loss.

I work two jobs (teaching 8 hours and heavy lifting/pushing carts in a parking lot for 5 hours) and there have been a couple of times where I had to eat fast food because I sometimes don't have time to make a meal. The information given in this book really does work in terms of treating yourself or resorting to fast food when you have to. I have not lost any weight for 2.5 years, but I have lost 20 lbs within 2 months this summer by working out for at least an hour (on the job) and using this book. Wow! I have it with me in my car all the time when I travel in between jobs besides the car manual- it is a must have!
